There are many commercial cat and dog foods available – all of which are completely nutritionally balanced to provide the optimum formula for your pets at all stages throughout their life. Because the growth phase is so important and sets the foundation for your pet’s future we strongly urge all new puppy and kitten owners to feed a specific puppy or kitten formula. This will ensure that energy requirements for growth are met, and the vital balance between calcium and phosphorous is maintained to allow for healthy bone development.
If you are feeding a good quality puppy or kitten food, there is absolutely NO need to provide any additional vitamin or mineral supplementation. In fact, over supplementation can be quite harmful to your pet’s health and may result in crippling or incurable skeletal deformities.
Young pups and kittens generally require 4 feeds daily. This frequency reduces as they get older and can vary with the individual, but generally aim for the following routine:
- From 6wks of age: Feed 4 times daily
- From 12wks of age: Feed 3 times daily
- From 16wks of age: Feed 2 times daily
- From 8 to 12months of age onwards: Feed once daily
