Please be sure your pets are clearly identified
From time to time, injured pets without identification turn up at vet clinics . If / when this happens, because there is no ID, owners can not be contacted and these animals have to (unavoidably) be assumed to be strays.
It DOES happen! Hit by car – no collar – no ID. Who is the owner? What to do? Should the animal be put down straight away? …Or, should we spend $2,000 trying to patch it up? Very often it is a case of damned if you do and damned if you don’t.
It is quite impossible for any animal shelter or veterinary practice to know what treatment (if any) the true owners of an unidentified stray might want and might want to pay for. Message is simple and clear:
- ALWAYS HAVE THAT COLLAR AND TAG ON … better still, have the collar and tag on PLUS have a microchip ID tag implanted as well.
- If your pet does have a tag or a microchip, but the contact details that go with it are not current and or not correct, it is useless.
So, PLEASE always be very careful that:
- You have the collar and the tag and (if possible) the microchip on the animal at all times
- You make sure the details carried by the collar, tag and chip are current and correct.
