How To Settle A Puppy In A New Home

Jun 14, 2023

Bringing home a new puppy can be a thrilling experience, but it can also present a unique set of challenges. In the first few days your puppy will be slightly confused and may pine for their mother and siblings. To help make the transition as smooth as possible for your new fur baby, here’s everything you need to know to create a warm and welcoming environment for your puppy.

Prepare Your Home

Before you bring your puppy home, there are several things you need to do:

  • Purchase the essentials: You puppy will need a new bed, food and water bowls, a leash, collar and harness, some toys to chew and snuggle and high quality puppy food appropriate for their age and breed.
  • Puppy-Proof Your House: Ensure it your home is safe and secure for your new companion. Remove any potentially hazardous items, such as toxic plants or loose wires and remove any valuable from low set areas.
  • Designate a Puppy Space: Create a comforting space with a cosy bed, toys and a water bowl. Your puppy will appreciate having its own space while adjusting to the new environment. You may choose a playpen, a pet crate or simply gate off an area with safety gates.

Establish A Routine

Consistency is key when settling a puppy into a new home. From feeding times to playtime and walks, a routine helps your puppy understand what to expect and reduces anxiety.

  • Introduce Socialisation Early: Early socialisation is crucial for your puppy’s development. Introduce your pup to various situations, people and other animals in a controlled and calm manner to help them become well-adjusted adults. Just make sure any dogs they meet are fully vaccinated for their safety.
  • Positive Reinforcement: Rewarding good behaviour with treats, praise or playtime is a proven strategy for helping your puppy understand what is expected. Remember, the goal is to foster a positive relationship between you and your puppy and this requires patience and consistency.

Visit Your Local Vet Clinic

If you want to keep your pup healthy, you’ll need to book an initial consultation at your local vet. In this initial check, your vet can check for any health issues, issue a vaccination schedule and start them on flea, tick and worming treatments. Routine health checks and vaccinations play an important role in your puppy's overall well-being. Visit your local vet clinic regularly to ensure your puppy stays healthy and protected from various diseases.
